Teen Addiction

The teen years are already tumultuous with school, dating, extracurricular activities, and social events, not to mention self-esteem and self-worth issues. Emotional, physical, hormonal, and psychological changes are also taking place and can be overwhelming for teens to navigate through. This is also the time when many teens start taking risks, and that includes trying drugs and alcohol. One question I have is about their relationship with Jesus. Do they know Jesus? Are they involved in any church activities or around any Christians to give them the spiritual balance they need in their life?

Addictive drugs and substances are everywhere in our society. Some have been around for decades or even centuries, while others have just cropped up in recent years. Dealing with addiction in teens can be very worrisome. Without some sort of a connection with God I am concerned if they can handle a spiritual battle with addiction.

Teen Addiction
Christian Ministry

Treatment centers see teenage patients struggling with addiction to many different types of drugs. As a parent, it’s important to stay informed of the drug landscape and to learn how it can affect your teen if they experiment. But, I highly recommend seeking a Christian based, faith ministry or a Christian counselor for a soul changing experience for your child that’s not just a band aid approach like most traditional 30 day rehab programs offer.

Teen drug abuse is a societal issue that has never gone away, but the way we look at teen addiction has become more sophisticated over the years. But does it have to be? I believe addiction is directly from Satan and without God in their life in some way it is very difficult to battle addiction alone.

Parents must stay vigilant to the disguise of the devil’s plan to steal, kill and destroy your child and your family along with your son or daughter.

John 10:10– The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Warning Signs Your Teen is Addicted to Drugs or Alcohol

While it’s not so easy to pinpoint some warning signs in particular drugs, there are some visible signs to look out for when addiction is developing or has developed. Let me tell you a little about Satan’s plans for your son or daughter and then you tell me these behaviors aren’t from Satan…

Satan zeroes in on young people. YOUR children are at the top of Satan’s hit list. Satan is out to get YOUR FAMILY—dead or alive!

We sing, “Everybody ought to know who Jesus is,” and they should; but everybody should also know who Satan is.

Many people laugh at the idea of an actual spirit-person named Satan. No one enjoys this more than Satan himself. His main work is deceiving people, and it is a lot easier to deceive people when they do not even think he exists. We might ask this question: If there is no real person named Satan, who is doing his work? It’s a lot easier for Satan to succeed winning over your children that are not of faith than those children of faith.

The Bible speaks of him thirty-nine times as “Satan,” and forty-eight times as “the devil.” In every case, it is referring to a real person, the supreme evil spirit-being.

Since the beginning of time, Satan has been deceiving people and murdering them. Jesus said,

“he was a murderer from the beginning… he is a liar and the father of it” (John 8:44).

Satan wants to deceive your children and murder your family. The Bible says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

The warfare of the ages is a never ending battle for the minds and hearts of people—all people.

Behavior Changes

It may be confusing to watch for signs of behavior changes that aren’t just normal for the teen years, but you know your teenager, so if the following occurs, it could be concerning. These changes include:

  • Acting secretive or isolated
  • Poor school performance
  • Changing friends or social circles
  • Increase in privacy
  • Illegal behavior
  • Missing school or extracurricular activities
  • Unexplained disappearances
  • Anger and hostility

Psychological Changes

Keep in mind; these psychological changes could be normal for this age group, so watch for changes outside of the typical patterns that could be indicative of addictive behavior.

  • Poor concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Slurred or rapid speech
  • Low energy levels
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Manipulative behavior
  • Fear or paranoia
  • Extreme shifts in energy

Changes in Health

Physical growth or being active in sports can alter teen’s health, but some of these symptoms may correlate with drug or alcohol use.

  • Being sick more frequently
  • Erratic sleep schedule (sleeping too much or not enough, or alternating between the two)
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Coordination problems

Changes in Appearance

Throughout a teen’s years, it’s quite reasonable for them to experiment with different appearances, sometimes even dramatically, depending on the type of social circle they’re engaged in — which is all normal. However, these telltale signs of addiction are easy to spot.

  • Visible track marks
  • Wearing long sleeves in warm weather
  • Bruises, cuts, and sores
  • Unusual odor
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Continually scratching
  • Sudden weight gain or loss
  • Poor hygiene
  • Pinpoint pupils

You suspect your teen is using drugs.

If you need help on how to talk to your kids when you think or see signs they’re using drugs, I would recommend reading this article>>>How to Talk to Your Kids When You Think They’re Using Drugs. Talking with your child may not be easy and you could cause more harm than good. If talks don’t cut it, get him or her to commit to seeking counseling. I recommend Christian based or faith based counseling. But, ultimately it’s your choice. It’s just important and critical to get them into any counseling asap.

Seeking help...

When you can verify or have your teen come clean about their addiction, and depending on how deep into drugs they are, you may wonder about rehab. Substance abuse disorders come in many forms, with even some occurring with a mental health disorder that could have triggered the abuse in the first place. It’s important to understand there is not just one cure for addiction. In the case of teens and young adults, it’s essential to find a recovery program that provides an effective treatment plan that includes teaching critical life reasoning skills.

If your teen shows some or many of those signs mentioned above, the first step is becoming educated about addiction and learning about the various methods of treatment. You may call the SAMHSA National Helpline 1-800-662-4357 it’s confidential and it’s free help, from public health agencies, to find substance use treatment and information… Learn more.

Addiction centers listen to your concerns and devise a plan to help your teen get the help they need. Any compassionate and supportive staff experienced in caring for teens who are going through counseling, detox and recovery. Please, reach out and give someone a call. You are not alone in your concern for your child. Reach out to your minister or go on line to local ministries that are affiliated with drug and alcohol recovery.

My personal view….When an addict is treated holistically (mind, body, and spirit), it’s much more effective in the long-run and helps prevent relapse. Holistic addiction therapies are non-medicinal treatment methods that aim to bring the mind, body and spirit into alignment to make a well-rounded recovery. It makes sense to me since I am am a person of faith.

The maximizing of health is certainly in line with the Scriptures. The Bible is clear that we are to take good care of our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) as they are the temple of the Holy Spirit. There are many verses that speak of using “medical treatments” such as applying bandages (Isaiah 1:6), oil (James 5:14), oil and wine (Luke 10:34), leaves (Ezekiel 47:12), wine (1 Timothy 5:23), and salves, particularly the “balm of Gilead” (Jeremiah 8:22). Many of these treatments would be considered holistic today, as holistic medicine often shies away from drugs and surgery at least as first treatments. In addition, many Christians have benefitted from principles embodied in holistic medicine.

Gender-Specific Treatment

Males and females are different; therefore, it’s integral that they are treated differently in addiction recovery. It’s every rehab center’s goal to ensure individuals feel comfortable and safe in their environment as they go through the addiction recovery process. This is why there are gender-specific treatment programs that target both males and females and their unique traits and characteristics. People are more likely to open up and talk about their challenges when with their sex, especially in cases of sexual abuse.

Conclusion…

Anyone can develop an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but teens are often particularly vulnerable to substance use and abuse. Adolescence lends itself to curiosity and exploration, which can have deadly impacts when teen drug use is thrown into the mix. While the National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that teen alcohol and illicit substance use have stagnated or decreased in recent years, teen addiction remains a possibility parents can’t ignore.

The best way to protect a teen from addiction is to stay informed about the causes and risk factors of teen substance abuse. Stay educated and alert with changes in your child. What is your gut telling you? Get God involved because this is a spiritual battle with drug addiction. Pray to Jesus and seek spiritual help and professional help immediately.
